Example 1: ''Mastering My Chess Skills'' 

 

Description and Goals

 

I have always enjoyed playing chess, finding it to be a fascinating game of strategy and mental challenge. Currently, I would consider myself an intermediate player, familiar with the basic rules and some common strategies. However, I recognize that there is significant room for improvement, particularly when it comes to advanced tactics and strategic depth. My primary goal for this CAS experience is to enhance my chess skills, with a specific focus on improving my tactical play and strategic understanding - I plan to learn key opening such as the King's Gambit or the Sicilian Defence. To achieve this, I plan to join the school's chess club, where I can participate in regular practice sessions and benefit from the experience and guidance of more skilled players. Additionally, I will be using Chess.com to monitor my progress, tracking my rating and analyzing my games to identify areas for further improvement.

 

This Description of Goals is effective as the student has identified their interests, skills and areas for growth as well as has created a plan for the CAS Experience, thus fulfilling the Investigation and Preparation stages of the 5 Stages of CAS framework. Also, through stating that the student would like to improve in tactical play the student has fulfilled the 1st Learning Outcome (''Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth''). The student has also fulfilled the 3rd Learning Outcome (''Demonstrate How to Plan and Initiate a CAS Experience'') by detailing a structured plan involving the school's chess club and Chess.com for tracking progress.

 

 

First Reflection 

 

A few days into my CAS experience of mastering chess, I am filled with enthusiasm and a strong sense of motivation. Although I haven't made significant progress yet, I am excited about the journey ahead. Joining the school's chess club has already proven to be a great decision; I've met several experienced players who are eager to help me improve. 

 

I've been using Chess.com to track my games and monitor my rating, which gives me a clear view of my current skill level and highlights areas for improvement. Although my rating has recently dropped from 725 to 698, this decline can be attributed to my experimentation with the King's Gambit opening, a strategy I'm still mastering. Despite this setback, I am confident that with continued practice and refinement, I will see improvements in my performance.

 

 

Second Reflection 

 

As I reach the midpoint of my CAS experience, I am pleased to see tangible improvements in my chess skills. My recent efforts to master the King's Gambit opening are starting to pay off, and I am becoming more comfortable and strategic with this approach. This progress is reflected in my Chess.com rating, which has risen to 867, a significant boost from my previous rating. 

 

The increase in my rating and my enhanced performance with the King's Gambit have greatly motivated me to continue my training. The sense of achievement from seeing concrete results has reinforced my commitment to the game. I am now more enthusiastic than ever about practicing and refining my techniques, knowing that my efforts are leading to real improvements. 

 

However, I have noticed that I often struggle in the late game, particularly when it comes to playing with rooks and pawns. I frequently find myself unable to promote my pawns and have lost several games due to this weakness. Recognizing this area for improvement, I plan to focus more on endgame strategies and techniques to address these challenges.

 

 

Final Reflection

 

As I conclude my CAS experience in mastering chess, I am proud to reflect on the significant progress I have made. Throughout this journey, I have not only improved my tactical play (I am now confident in the King's Gambit, it is my go-to opening when playing white as well as the Sicilian Defense) but also addressed the challenges I faced in the late game. My Chess.com rating has now reached an impressive 1002, a testament to the hard work and dedication I have invested. 

 

One of the most rewarding aspects of this experience has been overcoming my previous struggles with endgame scenarios. I focused intensively on improving my skills with rooks and pawns and learned to effectively promote my pawns, which has greatly enhanced my overall performance. This progress has been particularly satisfying, as it directly addresses the areas where I had previously encountered difficulties. 

 

Looking back on the entire experience, I am incredibly proud of how far I have come. My perseverance and commitment have truly paid off, and I have gained valuable skills both on and off the chessboard. This journey has not only improved my chess abilities but also taught me the importance of resilience, strategic thinking, and continuous self-improvement. 

 

 

These reflections are successful because they effectively illustrate the student's learning journey, showcasing both the challenges faced and the strategies employed to overcome them. Three reflections were provided, which is sufficient for a longer CAS experience. The student’s detailed account provides insight into their experiences and growth. In their reflections, the student has also met two CAS Learning Outcomes - through mentioning the willingness to learn even when faced with setbacks the student has fulfilled the 2nd Learning Outcome (''Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills in the Process'') as well as the 4th Learning Outcome (''Show Commitment to and Perseverance in CAS Experiences'').  

 

By undertaking the planned experience and reflecting on it, the student has successfully completed the Action and Reflection stages of the 5 Stages of CAS framework. Additionally, the evaluation included in the Final Reflection fulfills the Demonstration stage.

 

 

Example 2: ''Walking my neighbours dog''

 

 

Description and Goals

 

I have always enjoyed spending time with animals and wanted to help my elderly neighbor, who has mobility issues due to problems with her legs, by walking her dog. My goal is to provide the dog with regular exercise and attention, ensuring it stays healthy and happy. Additionally, I aim to develop a sense of responsibility and commitment by taking on this regular task. I will be walking the dog both in the mornings and in the evenings, fitting this routine into my daily schedule. 

 

 

The student has created a plan for the CAS Experience, thus fulfilling the Investigation and Preparation stages of the 5 Stages of CAS framework as well as the 3rd Learning Outcome (''Demonstrate How to Plan and Initiate a CAS Experience''). The student also strives to engage in an experience that aims to help those in need, thus fulfilling the 7th Learning Outcome (''Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions''). 

 

First Reflection 

 

As I embark on my CAS experience of walking my neighbor’s dog, I am filled with a sense of purpose and eagerness. My neighbor, who has difficulty walking due to her leg issues, relies on me to ensure her dog gets the exercise it needs. In the first few days, I have focused on establishing a regular walking routine, paying attention to the dog’s preferences. In the mornings I walk around the alleys and in the evenings usually take the dog to a nearby park where I let him off the leash so he can have some play time.

 

Second Reflection  

 

My neighbor is grateful for the help, and it feels rewarding to know that my efforts are making a difference. Walking the dog in the mornings and evenings has sometimes been tough. I have to wake up earlier to get ready for school and have less time for studying and hobbies in the evenings. Despite these challenges, I have consistently ensured the dog gets its walks. This experience has taught me patience and the importance of consistency. I am more motivated than ever to continue this journey, knowing that I am helping both my neighbor and her dog. I have also bought some toys and balls for us to play with in the park. 

 

Final Reflection 

 

As I conclude my CAS experience of walking my neighbor’s dog, I am proud of the progress and the positive impact I have made. Over the past weeks, I have seen the dog become more active and responsive during our walks. My neighbor has expressed her gratitude, and I am glad to have been able to support her by ensuring her dog gets regular exercise. 

Reflecting on this journey, I am proud of my dedication and the perseverance I have shown. Walking the dog in the evening has sometimes been challenging, especially during December of DP2 when I had to finish my university applications, Extended Essay, IAs, and prepare for mocks. Nevertheless, I have consistently taken the dog for its walks. This experience has taught me valuable lessons in responsibility, time management, and the joy of helping others. My commitment to walking the dog has not only benefited my neighbor and her pet but has also contributed to my own personal development. I am grateful for this opportunity and the growth it has provided. 

 

These reflections are successful because they vividly depict the student's learning journey and offer valuable insight into their experiences and development. The student has provided three reflections which is enough. By helping a person in need the student has effectively addressed the 7th Learning Outcome. Furthermore, by being consistent the student has demonstrated their unwavering determination, fulfilling the 4th Learning Outcome. 

 

The student's reflections also meet the Action, Reflection, and Demonstration stages of the CAS framework. The student has actively engaged in the experience, offered thoughtful reflections, and evaluated their overall journey.

Example 3: ''Drawing''

 

Description and Goals

 

Drawing has always been a hobby of mine, and I am eager to enhance my skills further. My goal is to dedicate regular time to practice different drawing techniques and styles, focusing on areas where I need improvement, such as shading and perspective. I plan to follow online tutorials to enhance my skills. Through this experience, I aim to develop my artistic abilities, gain confidence in my work, and produce a portfolio of drawings that showcase my progress. 

 

The student has developed a plan for the CAS experience, thereby meeting the Investigation and Preparation stages of the 5 Stages of CAS framework. Additionally, this effort fulfills the 3rd Learning Outcome (''Demonstrate How to Plan and Initiate a CAS Experience''). 

 

 

 

First Reflection 

 

I have just begun my CAS experience focused on improving my drawing skills, and I am filled with excitement and determination. Drawing has always been a passion of mine, but I have realized that there are several areas where I need to improve, such as shading and perspective. To start, I have been following a few online tutorials and practicing basic techniques. 

 

Over those past few days I have already noticed improvement in my shading, which made me even more motivated. I am looking forward to developing my skills and seeing how much I can improve over the next few months. 

 

Second Reflection 

 

Halfway through my CAS experience, I am happy to report that I have seen noticeable improvement in my drawing skills. I have also signed up for free art classes held in the local community centre. The local art classes have been incredibly helpful, and I have received constructive feedback from my peers and instructors. 

 

One challenge I faced was mastering the technique of creating realistic perspectives, but with persistent practice, I have made significant strides. My confidence has grown, and I am more motivated than ever to continue honing my skills. This experience has reinforced the importance of dedication and continuous learning. 

 

Final Reflection 

 

As I conclude my CAS experience focused on drawing, I am proud of the progress and growth I have achieved. Over the past months, I have dedicated myself to practicing various techniques, and my efforts have paid off. My drawings now display improved shading, perspective, and overall composition.

 

Reflecting on this journey, I am proud of my dedication and perseverance. I plan to continue my art journey even after the IB programme. Seeing the tangible progress in something I'm passionate about has made me even more fascinated in drawing.

By engaging in the planned experience and reflecting on it, the student has successfully completed the Action and Reflection stages of the 5 Stages of CAS framework. Moreover, the evaluation included in the Final Reflection meets the requirements of the Demonstration stage. 

 

 

Example 4 ''School Paintball Trip''

 

Reflection

 

The school paintball trip was an incredibly engaging and memorable experience. Taking place at the beginning of the school year, it provided a fantastic opportunity to bond with my classmates in a fun and dynamic environment. The thrill of the game, combined with the teamwork required, made it a unique and exciting way to start the year. 

 

Throughout the day, I found myself completely absorbed in the activity, strategizing with my teammates and working together to achieve our objectives. This collaborative aspect of paintball allowed me to connect with my classmates on a deeper level, forming new friendships and strengthening existing ones.

 

Overall, the paintball trip was not only a thrilling adventure but also an invaluable experience for building social connections and enhancing teamwork skills. It set a positive tone for the year ahead, and I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in such a fun and engaging activity. 

 

 

This reflection is effective in showcasing the student's engagement and personal growth during the school paintball trip. Since this was a single-event experience, a Description of Goals is not needed and one reflection is enough. The student describes the experience as not only thrilling but also valuable for building social connections and enhancing teamwork skills. This account highlights how the activity provided an opportunity to bond with classmates, forming new friendships and strengthening existing ones.  In the reflection, the student has met CAS Learning Outcome 5 (''Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively''). This is evident through their emphasis on the collaborative nature of the paintball game, where strategizing and teamwork were crucial.
