The goal is to demonstrate the ability to analyze and interpret the text's meaning, structure, and language.&nbsp;&nbsp;SL students have 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete a commentary on one of the two provided texts, while HL students must write two commentaries in 2 hours and 15 minutes. Despite the difference in time and number of commentaries, the format and structure for both levels are the same and are as follows:&nbsp;&nbsp;<h4>Introduction</h4>&nbsp;<ul><li>State the text type, its author and audience.&nbsp;</li><li>Then, it is best to state the text's purpose - i.e. the effect the author aimed to achieve with their text.&nbsp;</li><li>After that, include a thesis - i.e. a single sentence in the Introduction that highlights how the writer achieves their overall purpose. The thesis essentially serves as a broad summary of your argument, which you will then substantiate with evidence and analysis throughout the body of the essay.</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;<h4>Body</h4>&nbsp;<ul><li>The body of the essay is where the main analysis takes place. In the body paragraphs, students aim to provide textual evidence and analysis to support their thesis.&nbsp;</li><li>Each paragraph should focus on a specific aspect of the text. Students have the flexibility to organize their text as they see fit.
